Project Description

The RDNO acquired a 126.5-hectare natural area known as the Coldstream Ranchlands in 2021 to create a passive recreation amenity and conserve the sensitive ecosystem on the land. After completing environmental and archeological assessments, the RDNO created a draft development plan for the site. Now, we are looking for input from the public on the proposed trail and park amenities. Please complete the survey below before October 23, 2023.

Key features of the draft development plan:

  • 6.9km looping trail, which avoids sensitive sites
  • Amenities to include garbage receptacles, dog waste bags
  • Points for connections to the Grey Canal Trail and Vernon Hills conceptual trail network
  • Public parking on Ravine Drive, Coldstream, subject to approval from the District of Coldstream
  • Decommissioning existing trails that were used by ranchers and recreationists and restoring them to a natural state

About the Development Plan & Coldstream Ranchlands

The RDNO acquired the Coldstream Ranchlands in alignment with the Greater Vernon Trails and Natural Spaces Master Plan’s objective of increasing passive recreational opportunities within our natural spaces while protecting ecological and archaeological values. The Coldstream Ranchlands property offers users picturesque viewpoints of Vernon, Okanagan Lake, and Kalamalka Lake, and the proposed trail alignment would provide a loop trail that gives users a relatively challenging slope while conserving areas that are highly sensitive ecosystems and limiting impact to the values of the agricultural land reserve. Additionally, the development plan proposes the use of existing, unofficial trails while also decommissioning others to return the environment to its natural state.
