A volunteer fire department was organized for Silverstar mountain in 1989 by then resort owner and fire fighter, Norm Crerar. Originally staffed as an all-volunteer force, the department has evolved into the modern public service it is today with sixteen (16) Paid-On-Call (POC) firefighters.
The Silver Star Village Fire Protection Local Service Area was established in 1993 and the Fire Department was established 3 years later in January 1996 by Bylaw 1347. These bylaws were amended in 1997 to add provision of emergency first medical responders to the service area. Since 1997, the bylaw has been amended twice to expand the boundaries of the service area to include new residential developments and Silver Star Road itself.
Fire Chief Russ Mills was introduced to the fire department in 1996 by a friend who knew of his mechanical skills and interest in the fire department. Years later, his respectful nature and clear potential for leadership earned him the position of Fire Chief.
