As the spring freshet continues, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) urges the public to exercise extreme caution when near creeks and streams. The recent warm weather and ongoing snowmelt have resulted in swelling water levels, and it is vital for residents and visitors to be aware of the potential dangers associated with swift water and high-flowing streams.
The RDNO has identified several safety guidelines and reminders to ensure the well-being of individuals who may find themselves near waterways during this period:
- Keep a safe distance from stream edges: Streams running at high flow can erode banks, making them unstable and hazardous. We urge everyone to maintain a considerable distance from the water's edge and avoid walking or playing near it.
- Respect the power of water: Even seemingly calm water can harbour strong currents beneath the surface. Swift water possesses immense force and can easily sweep individuals off their feet, even in shallow depths. Refrain from wading or swimming in swift water, regardless of its apparent tranquillity.
- Heed warning signs and advisories: The RDNO and other authorities may post warning signs and advisories near waterways to alert the public about hazardous conditions. We implore residents and visitors to adhere to these warnings and avoid unnecessary risks by staying away from the water until conditions improve.
- Be prepared for emergencies: If you plan to recreate outdoors, carry a cell phone for emergency communication and inform someone trusted about your whereabouts and anticipated return time. Dress appropriately for outdoor activities, pack a first aid kit, and wear suitable footwear.
- Utilize proper equipment: If engaging in activities such as kayaking or canoeing, ensure you possess the appropriate equipment and sufficient experience. Always wear a personal flotation device and adhere to weight limits specified for your watercraft.
The RDNO emphasizes that swift water can pose a significant threat to personal safety. Even individuals with swimming or boating experience should exercise extreme caution around waterways during this period. By following these safety guidelines, we can collectively reduce the risk of injury or loss of life and enjoy our time outdoors safely.
