The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is inviting community members, business owners and other interested people to apply to participate in the RDNO’s Regional Solid Waste Management Plan Monitoring Working Group (PMWG).

The RDNO is looking for at most 15 members from the private industry, non-profit and business sectors as well as community members. Members will represent a balance of community interests and act as advisors to the Board of Directors on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP).

Tasks will include reviewing information related to the implementation of the SWMP, including waste quantities, population, and diversion rates for each plan component; providing input on design and implementation of public surveys and consultation processes for new diversion programs and disposal facilities; assisting in the review of current programs and identifying issues and opportunities.

The appointed members of the PMWG will be appointed for a two-year term expected to begin in March 2020. Meetings will be conducted every three months at most, or at the call of the Chair. The location of the meetings will be at the RDNO office at 9848 Aberdeen Road in Coldstream. The PMWG will conclude its work when the SWMP is being updated, expected to be in 2023.

“Monitoring the implementation of strategies to maximize the diversion of waste from RDNO landfills is an important part of reaching our new, lower waste disposal target set by the Board of Directors and approved by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy in 2018,” said Kevin Acton, Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors.

Mike Fox, General Manager Community Services, stated that “contributing to programs and policies that are in the best interests of residents of the North Okanagan and balancing both community and industry needs and technical requirements will be major parts of this Working Group’s objectives.”

More information, as well as the Working Group Terms of Reference and Application Form, are available on the RDNO website and at the RDNO office. We hope to review all applications in January and nominate members in February 2020.
