As a result of decreased temperatures, increased precipitation, and higher relative humidity, the BC Wildfire Service has announced that Category 1 campfires will again be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre effective today at 12 p.m. (noon), Wednesday, August 28, 2024. The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is following suit, and has also issued a rescind notice for Electoral Areas B and C.
Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited until noon on October 11, 2024, or until those orders are rescinded. With this, the following activities and equipment are also restricted:
- Fireworks;
- Sky Lanterns;
- Binary Exploding Targets;
- Air Curtain Burners; and
- Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description, except when used for a Category 1 campfire as defined by the Wildfire Regulation.
To learn more about the different categories of open burning, visit the BC Wildfire Service Open Burning webpage.
These updated prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre jurisdiction, including RDNO Electoral Areas B and C. Always check with local government authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in effect.
