RDNO Reminds Residents Living on ALR Land of New Provincial Regulations and Upcoming Deadline

Update, January 27, 2020: The grandfathering period set by the Province for manufactured homes in the ALR for immediate family members has been extended to December 31, 2020. Please visit their website for more information.

In February 2019, Provincial regulations changed for properties within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). One of the major changes is that new secondary residences for a member of the property owner’s immediate family (manufactured or mobile homes) are going to be prohibited after February 22, 2020.

If you are planning on installing a secondary dwelling for family in the ALR and you live within the building inspection area of the RDNO (Electoral Areas B, C, D, E, F, Lumby, Spallumcheen) you must receive your building permit by February 22, 2020. This means, you need to apply at least 30 days prior (January 23, 2020) so that staff can assess your application and issue a permit on time.

There are multiple new regulations regarding existing and new residential buildings, including moving soil and fill material. As these Provincial regulations continue to change, it is best to speak with either Agricultural Land Commission staff or RDNO Planning and Building staff before making an application, starting construction, non-agricultural uses, or moving soil on ALR Land. Find more information on RDNO building permits on our website.
